After a wild year for anime movies in 2025 with movies such as Demon slayer: kimetsu no yaiba – infinity castle and Chainsaw man the movie reze arc it going to be interesting to see what 2026 had in store for the world of anime.

I am starting off the year checking out a new movie Another world from Director Tommy Ng Kai Chung, based upon the Japanese novel Sennenki: Thousand-Year Journey of an Oni (千年の ) by Naka Saijo so Another world was created in hong kong based upon Japanese source material and end up been the highest grossing movie from hong kong for 2025.

Going into this movie I am reminded of a other movie from last year the Glass woker what start out a passion project from a team from Pakistan that was a love letter to classic studio ghibli movies that had a uk cinema release last year its really interesting to see a lot of these international takes on a anime production still striving and getting international releases out side there local market.

Another world tell the story of spirit guide called Gudo his job is to help soul in the after life reach reincarnation, one day Gudo meets a young girl called Yuri who is hunting for her bother and will not talk no for an answer the movie jumps around for a while telling with Gudo meeting with different people throughout time and then the movie jumping back to the plot with Yuri at first I did find this a bit jarring as it did fill like the movie was just jumping around for no real reason but then everything started to full into place and everything snaps together to make a very interesting last act that wraps up all the movies themes very beautifully.

I loved the animation and character design in a Another World I know a lot of the marketing is saying its inspired by Studio Ghibli that I do definitely see but I do think the creative team did take some inspiration from the 2011 anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica which is considered a anime classic I can see the use of brighter colours and the use of shading on characters but the designs do take a inspiration and go in there own interesting Direction, I will say this I love Gudo design and the design on the the creatures from the underworld all had some interesting character design, the 2d and 3d animation blended very well and nothing felt out of place a issue I have been finding with some anime movies lately,Another World is a gorgeous movie to look at and is up there with both Demon slayer: kimetsu no yaiba – infinity castle and Chainsaw man the movie reze arc on its animation quality.

Another World is a fantastic little surprise package its definitely a movie you have to fully concentrate on to fully appreciate this movie and definitely isn’t a film for younger viewers,the the animation is top-notch and to the same level than other anime movies coming out at the moment with a story that will make you think and some great great characters, I strongly recommend Another World to any fans of animation and will be a experience that will stay with you and is a very strong start to 2026.

Another World will be in UK cinema from the 30th January thanks to City Media also the movie Director Tommy Ng Kai Chung and writer Polly Yeung will be touring the uk from the 29th January for Q&A its great to see that animation fans arcoss the uk will get amazing chance to meet some of the production team.
