Today we take a look at Anime limted new release, heading to uk cinemas this week is The last blossom from the Director Baku Kinoshita well known for his 2021 critical hit anime Odd taxi with the exciting upcoming anime Studio Clap on board to Produce the movie, I was really excited to see what these 2 would come up with.

Our movie starts with an old man Akutsu in a prison cell and his right at the end of his life all alone it looks like Akutsu is on his deathbed alone, until out of no where a talking balsam flower appears there is a we here of a Legend that newborns and people on there deathbeds can talk to Balsam flowers, Akutsu takes this bizarre opportunity to remember back to 30 years earlier to the summer of 1986.

Akutsu is a young and upcoming Yakuza memeber he share a house with a young woman called Nana and her babay son Kensuke the two of them are living a very chill life and doing improv performances of Stand by me while watching the local baseball team go on a winning run, there relationship is just a platonic one but you can see that Nana dose have romantic feeling for Akutsu but sadly Akutsu dose not see it.

We Also see Akutsu life in the Yakuza with fellow memeber Hosenka, life seem to be going well for everyone until young Kensuke becomes very ill devastating both Nana and Akutsu who see Kensuke like a son, his life can be saved by a medical transplant but the waiting list is very long and would cost a lot of moeny, this comes at the worst time for Akutsu as the Yakuza activity is not bring much money at the time meaing Akutsu will have to do something drastic to get the money, Akutsu and Hosenka scheme to fully take over the Yakuaza but we see how far is Akutsu willing to go and is willing to give up everything to give Kensuke a chance at life.

I found the story of The last blossom a thoughtful one, a story of a man who was unable to pick up on his ture feelings but deep down inside he did the right thing and was able to protect the one thing he held dearest in this world. I enjoyed the set up of a older Akutsu looking back and telling the balsam flower about the choices he made. The movie is dose include a sub plot about a bury treasure one a really sweet and touching scene right at the end that wrapped up Akutsu story perfectly with a lovely and I enjoyed the cover version of stand by me.

I feel one of the strongest parts of The last blossom was the character design Baku Kinoshita has a very unique and cute style which we see in Odd taxi and really fit this movie. I cant believe how cute Akutsu Design is you can tell he a Yakuza but his cute design brings out his vulnerable side perfectly that works very well for the more emotional scenes. The cast puts in a great job as well includes Natsuki Hanae you may know as Kamado Tanjirô from last year hit movies Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle and best boy Bean in Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.

Over all The last blossom was really interesting watch I am happy to see Studio Clap put out a other hit after really enjoying there last movie The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes and work really well with Baku Kinoshita I hope this is a start of a great partnership and looking foward to seening what both Studio Clap and Baku Kinoshita make next.
